Regulations affecting construction projects

Stormwater runoff is part of a natural hydrologic process. However, land development and construction activities can significantly alter natural drainage patterns and pollute stormwater runoff. Here are some tips on how to prevent runoff pollution at your construction site. The materials at our Resource Library illustrate in detail the best ways prevent pollution, and include contact information on companies that you can contract for waste disposal and recycling.

  • Identify all storm drains, drainage swales and creeks located near the construction site, and make sure all subcontractors are aware of their locations to prevent pollutants from entering them.
  • Train employees not to dump anything down storm drains.
  • Protect all storm drain inlets using filter fabric cloth to prevent sediments from entering the storm drainage system during construction activities.
  • Keep materials out of the rain, and prevent runoff pollution at the source.
  • Store hazardous waste in drums and covered bins and contract a company to dispose of it for you.
